According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake struck at 4:27 p.m. local time and registered the highest possible intensity of seven on Japan's Shindo seismic scale. The agency warned that the resulting tsunami could generate waves of up to one metre.
Although there were no immediate reports of casualties, the earthquake caused widespread power outages, with about 45,000 households and facilities in the Kumamoto region left without electricity, according to Kyushu Electric Power.
The utility company, however, confirmed that the three nuclear reactors operating in the affected region continued functioning normally despite the tremor.
Local broadcaster NHK reported that the powerful shaking continued even after the initial quake. A reporter delivering a live broadcast from the newsroom said the tremors were so intense that it was difficult to remain standing.
"Shaking is continuing as I speak. Including myself, there may be some people who feel their hearts racing.
"When the quake struck, the shaking was so big that I could not stand up. Please be aware of the possibility that shaking might continue after this."
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain alert for aftershocks and follow tsunami safety advisories as emergency officials continue to monitor the situation.
